Arthritis for Dogs Rapid Relief for your Dog from painful arthritis symptoms

What is safe to give a dog for pain and dehydration?

Posted on November 25, 2009

My dog ran away last night and we just found her a few hours ago. I reckon she might have got hit by a car...she yelps in pain when you touch her back side and she is walking kind of hunched over. Is there anything I can give her for pain? Would it be ok to give her pedialyte for dehydration? My vet is closed until Monday and I can not afford to go to an Emergency Hospital

  1. you are going to make her wait all weekend to see a doctor? She might not make it if hit by a car. Who knows what sort of injuries she may have.

  2. Yes it is ok to give the pet te baby non-flavored pediolyte for dehydration. You may give it a baby asprin for the pain.

  3. Pedialyte is ok but we’re talking here: aspirin. Water, too.

  4. for dehydration give her the non flavored pedialyte. u can usually find it in the baby aisle. and also give her a baby asprin. i give them to my dog for arthritis.

  5. Are you serious?? I find it very odd. There are people here who have birthday parties for their dogs, dress them up in small clothes, buy strollers for them… all sorts of things, maybe silly but obviously bought with like.. AND your dog is likely hit by a car, hunched in pain, yelping in pain… dehydrated… and OMG you won’t even spring for the emergency animal hospital visit???

The most you can give her is Buffered aspirin.. and Pedialyte for the dehydration. Pedialyte helps their system use moisture better as well as provide moisture you should encourage to drink water if you can..

  6. Pedialyte is fantastic for dehydration. Gatorade works as well in a pinch too. I don’t suggest that you give the dog anything until you get her to a vet. She may have internal injuries or any number of things could be incorrect that would aggravate the pain and make it worse or even kill her. Keep her penned in so she can’t go around, offer plenty of clean water and take her to the vet as soon as you can.

  7. I’ve heard my veterinarian tell people not to give their animals baby asprin. it’s very risky and the dosage has to be just right. If you dog got hit by a car and is pain, you should just bite the bullet and take her to a doctor. she could have injuries that without immiediate care will kill her.

  8. As a Trauma nurse I must tell you that often they are in shock and this baby can crash. She needs fluids IV and x-rays to determine broken bones. More importantly you need to know about internal life threatening injuries that could cause her death. Please reconsider and take her to the Vet.

  9. If you reckon your dog was run over by a car, you need to get her to a vet, period. Baby aspirin or the 81 mil ones are ok to give them but it depends on the size of the dog. Small dogs 1/2 an aspirin and over 20 lbs, a full 81 mil tablet is ok but not long term. Having a dog means being able to financially be responsilbe for that dog just like a family member. If you can’t, don’t have a dog.

  10. If I were you, I’d take the dog to the emergency vet.

Not just because shes in pain, though that is certainly reason enough, but because if you wait you may end up paying more at your regular vet than the emergency vet would cost because your dog’s condition could deteriorate.

She could even die before your regular vet opens on Monday — the walking hunched over could be a symptom of internal injuries and bleeding. Don’t give her aspirin (and certainly don’t give her any other human pain reliever — they’re toxic to dogs) because it thins blood and increases bleeding. If she has to have surgery, that could be a serious complication.

Reckon of it this way…if you had been injured and were in pain, would you wait till Monday to call your doctor, or would you go to the ER?

  11. If has internal injuries from being hit by that car, she may not make it until Monday.
Even if she doesn’t, it isn’t safe to wait = especially if she is in that kind of pain.

Take her to an emergency service for x=rays at least, how much can that cost. This is a necessity, not a luxury.

You need to get some Rimadyl at least, not aspirin – that isn’t safe for most dogs.

  12. She could have serious internal injuries. Isn’t she worth taking to the emergency room? She may not make it until Monday if she’s not treated.

  13. If your dog has been hit by a car then she could be in or go into shock. You need to get her to a vet NOW! You should not treat your dog at home without first consulting a professional(and NO ONE on here is that professional). Excellent luck

  14. Listen to help, they know what they are talking about. Baby aspirin and pedialite !! Rush!
